A section 106 agreement to provide sports facilities and changing room space as well as community hall type facilities necessitated the design of a multi-purpose space somewhere at BedZED but space was limited owing to the density of the housing and inclusion of a full size sports pitch. As there was also a need for a space to house both the onsite water reclamation plant and the combined heat and power plant and storage for the fuel (woodchips), ZEDfactory sought to combine the spaces under one roof and create a single building that embodied the key ideas of the scheme. Now widely used by the residents of BedZED for a range of community events as well as tour group discussions and seminars.
