Project Infomation

Client: Guangzhou Lieqi Furniture Co.Ltd.

Site Location: Zhejiang Province Shangchuan

Project Date: 2013

Project Status: Construction Finished

ZEDfactory designed a central atrium space that was predominantly glazed and clad in solar electric panels on its southern surfaces. This structure cascades down the mountainside like an abstracted dragon – its open mouth both swallowing the prevailing winds and absorbing tourists from the existing car park at its base. The visitors enter the building via a gentle ramp that connects all the activities in the building – passing a café / bar and restaurant and up into exhibition space, past a library and reading space – over the atrium and back down through the water museum and lecture hall to the atrium market place. Almost every visitor will take this route because it is filled with light, interesting views over the landscape and is fun without requiring too much exertion. On the way they will learn about the village and the building, and leave ready to make the best of the day ahead.

"Design Driven by Local Inspiration and Creative Material...design spirit for Lucky furniture and also for the Cloud Clubhouse..."

"The Architecture is intended not to fight the landscape but to complement it and explain why it is important."

Environmental Strategy

Energy Strategy Diagram

The building should be airtight, highly insulated, and well ventilated.

The key to designing a zero carbon building is to optimise the followingbuilding physics strategies:

  • Super insulation

ZEDstandard typical wall, floor and roof construction has a U valueof 0.15 W/m2k and double glazed U-value of 1.5W/m2k.It is essential that the insulation meets all the way around the construction, otherwise there will be cold bridges where the heat will flow through and negate any benefits of the insulation.

  • Thermally massive

Materials with high thermal mass store heat or coolth and release it when the internal temperatures fluctuate. This ability to absorb heat also keeps thermally massive buildings up to 10deg cooler than peak summer day time temperature so the need for air conditioningis avoided.

  • Create an airtight envelope.

Once super insulated the biggest heat losses from a building aredue to ventilation. Ventilation is required for breathing, moisture control and odour control.

ZEDstandard buildings control energy losses due to ventilation with airtight construction that then means all incoming and outgoing air can be controlled and passed through a heat exchanger. In this way, the interior space can have plentiful ventilation with very little energy loss.

Airtightness is predominantly achieved by the use of wet applied plaster to the internal walls and careful robust detailing that inherently leads to an airtight envelope. Care is taken during constructionof the walls that all perpends are fully filled and that plasteris applied right down to the screed. Careful use is made of skirting boards and architraves to cover joints where shrinkage cracks may occur. Full use of acrylic gap sealer is encouraged in the decoration package.
